BASc Green Gown Career Roundtable
(March 27, 2024)

On March 27, 2024, BASc students gathered at the Loke Yew Hall of HKU’s historic Main Building for the second BASc Green Gown Career Roundtable event.  In the spirit of future-readiness, students from Year 1 through to Year 4 from all six BASc programmes attended to prepare for their future careers and professional lives. The event started with an interview with Dr. Winnie Tang, MH, JP, Founder and Chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong) Limited. Dr. Tang shared about the many challenges and opportunities throughout her career journey. She encouraged our BASc students to be curious and supportive, to think out of the box, and be future ready.  Dr. Tang remarked that crucial to this preparation is interdisciplinarity and the integrative skillsets to cross boundaries and make connections.  BASc students were matched with four groups of mentors according to sectors and industries of their interest:  (1) Business and Finance, (2) Technology, (3) Enterprises and Start-ups, and (4) NGOs and Public Service. Over 25 mentors generously shared their experiences and advice with our students.  Students greatly appreciated the opportunity to interact with leaders in the industry.  Our mentors reciprocally appreciated the opportunity to connect with some of HKU’s most promising students, creating new frontiers for not only knowledge and skills, but also work and employment.

Immediately after the event, a job fair exclusive for BASc students was held for the first time. Thanks to the support from our mentors and the efforts of the University’s Centre for Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), there were over 60 job/internship opportunities which sought our students to fill!

Congratulations to our BASc(Design+) graduates Miss Heung Tsz Kwan Winnie and Miss Yu Jianing Nomy on winning the Gold Prize at the Global Design iT Award 2023 of the Korean Federation of Design Industry Associations with their project ‘This is Loofah!’. The project was originally developed in one of the Design+ major courses “Design+ Studio 2 – Rationale” led by Mr. Dennis Cheung in 2021. It explores all potential ways to extend the natural properties of loofah (luffa) and applies it as an alternative material for furniture design. Two types of furniture are created to explore/examine the privacy, portability, and weight efficiency given by loofah. With their innovative manufacturing process, both designs can be sustained for years and are 100% biodegradable.
